Phil Stone Town of Canterbury Road Agent
Heidi Hutchinson Canterbury Recycling Committee Representative
Met with Phil Stone outside the town garage.
Phil Expressed preference for either rebuilding on existing site
with additional bay, as part of combined Garage, PD and FD community
centered facility, or building down near Exit 18 on the Canterbury
Industrial site.
Phil does not believe the location available at the town Dump
would be big enough or suitable for building the type of Town
garage he feels the town needs.
Major concerns for new building:
Heating
Space for covering all vehicles
Hot water and plumbing for personnel
Perhaps some personal space for garage employees for "downtime"
Heidi Hutchinson spoke with us about her planning needs.
One major need is space and ability to further separate paper
and other products so that better returns could be had than on
the general "comingled" rate.
Would like to get bailer (to increase profatibility/efficiency
of recycling), but that will need an indoor space to be stored
as well as space for completed bails before they are transported
to recycling facility.
If we had more space for "roll off" containers more
separation of C & D (construction and demolition) materials
could be specialized.
In general, if more space were available better recycling would
be possible.
Plymouth, Sanbornton and Wilton have excellent
perhaps model,
recycling centers.
Paul in Plymouth has done a great job organizing the recycling
center to actually make a fair amount of money for the community.
Funds from recycling go back in to Town "General Fund"
at this time.
First Thursday of each month is typically the recycling committees
meeting time at 6:30 PM in the Selectmens office at Sam
Lake House.
Eventually the dump will need to be "capped" as mandated
by the State
a very expensive proposition. This is something
to consider before deciding to build on any space that has not
yet been capped.
Discussion was given to organizing a time for community wide input
sometime in the next month. The point being to invite input before
the committee has yet moved too far in any direction.
NEXT MEETING:
The next meeting will be in two weeks, on 6/6/01 at 7 PM at Canterbury
Police Station with Chief Gwen Deurell. We are anticipating a
community meeting two weeks after that on June 20th, 2001 at the
Town Hall to invite input from community members. A firm time
for that meeting has not been set, but is recommended to be at
7:00 PM.
